Chapter Fourteen

“What’s exciting in your life?” Josephine poured two cups of liquid that resembled motor oil more than coffee, but I accepted it happily. “Can I cook you up something? A grilled cheese? Fries? It’s mostly just bar food.”

I shook my head. “No, thank you though. The coffee is fine.”

She offered me sugar and creamer, and I used them liberally. When coffee doesn’t turn any color after creamer is added, you know that shit’s been around for more than a dozen songs from the jukebox. Still, it was better than sitting in my room all by myself, conjuring up plots and schemes all centered around some person or monster or who knew what.

“You didn’t answer my question, Valentina,” she said. Crinkles formed on the sides of her eyes when she laughed. She looked more tired than me.

“Oh…what’s exciting? Well, I think I’m going insane. That much I know.”

She leaned back in her chair and crossed her arms over her chest. “Is that so? Do tell? Everyone needs a little insanity in their lives.”

“This isn’t the good kind, I don’t think.”

She squinted one eye and turned her head a bit. “Come on, already? Are you in trouble? I know people. And if you killed someone, I’ve got a shovel. Spit it out, Youngblood.”

I believed her when she insinuated that she would help me if I was in trouble. I really did. She had that spark in her eye. “Maybe it’s just the night shift hangover. I’ve done it before. It’s the worst.”

She uncrossed her arms and leaned over the tiny square table. “If you don’t tell me, I’m going to raise your rent. Come on, girl. Give me something to gossip about.”

“You can’t tell anyone!” I said a little too loudly.

She squinted at me. “Tell anyone what?”

I groaned, feeling as tiny as a mouse. “Fine. The first night I was working at the academy, I was cleaning and glanced outside. I saw this guy standing in the courtyard. Then he…this is the crazy part. I swear he turned into some kind of beast or monster. After that, I ran to make sure all the doors were locked, and he tried to come in.”

“He saw you?” she asked, her voice rising in volume.

“Yeah. He looked up and saw me. It was like we made eye contact. Those windows are tinted so that no one can see in at night. How in the hell did he see me?”

“Give me one second.” Josephine got up and closed the swinging door that separated the tiny kitchen area from the rest of the bar. I could still hear the cutting up and the music but it certainly was better. I also heard Josephine tell the other bartenders to hold down the fort. “Okay, so explain the monster.”

I did. With shaking hands and ragged breaths, I told her everything I knew, and funny enough, her expression never changed. “You don’t seem shocked.”

She blew out a breath. “That’s because I’m not. Listen, V, I didn’t tell you, but this city…well, there are things that go bump in the night, if you know what I mean.
